This is the story of how Jacob wrestled with God (who is in some human or angelic form to have this encounter with Jacob). When people wrestle, they find out a lot about themselves; they find their breaking point. Imagine wrestling with God all night. Ok so a six-minute wrestling match is enough for many people and puts their bodies in enough pain and strain to make anyone want a break or even quit. Well, Jacob went all night even when his hip was put out, he held on desperately knowing it was God. By the end of the night when God asks what his name is and Jacob tells Him, God tells him it is no longer Jacob, which means ‘manipulator’ but changes it to something totally transforming – Israel which means ‘God’s champion’.
That is who we want to be. We want to be like Jacob who held on to God no matter what the circumstance, got blessed by God which changed his name, and in essence, changed his whole life from there on out.
When we are no longer labeled what or who we used to be, we are transformed into God’s children with a whole new vision for our lives. In the wrestling matches of this earthly life - as He tests our faith or the adversary comes to challenges us – Hold on to God and He will bless us as He did Jacob.
